Event Description:

We will be participating in the Wisconsin Maritime Museum’s USS Cobia Overnight Education Program which offers the opportunity to explore and sleep on a restored World War II submarine moored on the shores of Lake Michigan as well as admission to the museum the following morning and an event patch.

We will stop to eat dinner at a restaurant prior to the submarine campout program which begins Friday night at 7:30 p.m. Aboard the submarine, our guides will provide educational activities as well as supervised access to some non-public areas of the submarine during the “Hands on Tour” which runs from about 8:10-10:30 p.m. with “Bunking Down” at about 10:50 p.m. There may be an optional “Nook and Cranny” tour after that time for those who wish to stay up later and learn more about the sub. The submarine is heated/air-conditioned, but scouts should wear layers. We will spend the night in bunks in one of the four areas of the submarine as designated for us by our guides. There are no restroom facilities on the submarine, so anyone needing to use the facilities will need to have a buddy (an adult leader or overnight guide) accompany him/her to the museum facilities.

Saturday morning “Reveille” is at 7:20 a.m. and we must clear the boat by 7:40 a.m. to return our sleeping gear to the vehicles before visiting the adjacent Maritime Museum. There is a dedicated space where we will have breakfast before exploring the museum, which offers a unique place to learn about the sailors, shipbuilders, and submariners who made history. We are tentatively planning to leave the museum no later than noon, grab a quick lunch on the road before returning to the church by dinner time Saturday night.

Breakfast at the museum and snacks aboard the sub will be coordinated by the youth leader and will be a small additional cost to the event. In addition, you have the option of purchasing souvenir dog tags for an additional $5.25 that will include your name and date of the event. These must be pre-ordered when registering for the event on the troop website. Please specify your color choice as well: red/white/blue, rainbow, red, blue, black, pink, camouflage, clear, purple, yellow, orange, or green.

IMPORTANT: When you register on the website, you are committing to attending the event and paying the $48 registration fee. If for any reason, you are unable to attend, you will still be responsible for the cost unless you find someone to replace you. You must also have current (less than 1 year old at time of event) BSA health form parts A and B and insurance cards. Blank form can be downloaded/saved from https://filestore.scouting.org/filestore/HealthSafety/pdf/680-001_ABC.pdf. You also need the Wisconsin Maritime Museum Waiver and Release of Liability form filled out, which can be downloaded from http://www.wisconsinmaritime.org/fileadmin/maritime/documents/Overnights/RELEASE_OF_LIABILTIY_MJ_10_13.pdf
